A run of untimely injuries has left Jurgen Klopp with some big calls to make, but Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish has no reason to doubt the German.
‘In Jurgen we trust’ was the message Dalglish had in mind in response to Liverpool’s dwindling defensive options.
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are out with long-term injuries after undergoing surgery. Joel Matip, therefore, is Klopp’s sole remaining senior center-back alongside academy graduate Nathaniel Phillips. Although the returning Fabinho can provide additional cover from the backline.
But many are tipping Klopp to go on a spending spree in January to reinforce his defensive. Jamie Carragher, for one, believes it’s essential if another Premier League trophy is to arrive at Anfield at the end of the season.
“I’m trusting the manager to make the right decision – he has done so far!” Reds legend Dalglish told the Liverpool Echo on his verdict of Klopp’s problems.
“It’s a really unfortunate thing, the transfer window is closed and we’ve picked up a few serious injuries and the likes of Thiago are still out too.
“But in Jurgen, we trust.
“There’s no problem as he will make the right decision – the two boys in [Rhys] Williams and [Nat] Phillips did really well when they came in for the games they played.
“The manager has got options in those two but if it’s possible to get a free transfer in then he might think that’s the best route, but whatever he decides is the best route for Liverpool.”
Reports have linked Dayot Upamecano, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Ben White with moves to Anfield in the January transfer window.
