Xherdan Shaqiri becomes the latest Liverpool player to return a positive test for the coronavirus, the Swiss FA have confirmed.
Liverpool & Switzerland forward Xherdan Shaqiri has taken a period of self-isolation after he found out on Tuesday that he has been affected by COVID-19.
After Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara, he becomes the third member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad to test positive for the virus.
The 28-year-old’s health condition was brought into attention by the Swiss FA, although a conformation from his club is yet to come.
“Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for Covid-19. In consultation with the health authorities, he is in isolation,” stated the Swiss FA in a statement released on their official website.
“The strict protective measures and requirements of UEFA for national teams in accordance with the ‘UEFA Return to Play Protocol’ have been strictly adhered to. Based on this, clarifications are currently underway with the local health authorities about how to proceed.”
Shaqiri now faces withdrawal from Vladimir Petkovic’s squad for Switzerland’s latest round of friendly and UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Switzerland are due to face Croatia in a friendly on Wednesday, before going up against Spain on Saturday and Germany next Tuesday in the Nations League.
