The Portuguese forward has struggled for goals this season.

Jamie Carragher has questioned Jurgen Klopp’s decision to start Diogo Jota ahead of Darwin Nunez at Liverpool.

Jota started for the Reds in their 6-1 thrashing of Leeds United on Monday. The Portugal international scored twice for his side in the second half, ending his season-long goal drought in the Premier League.

Jota also provided an assist for Mohamed Salah’s first goal. But that wasn’t enough to change Carragher’s mind about the starting lineup.

“I’m not quite sure why Nunez isn’t playing,” the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sport’s Monday Night Football.

He added: “He’s got goals in the past for Liverpool, he’s gone a long time without scoring but it’s just really interesting, for me, the fact that Jurgen Klopp is playing him ahead of Nunez, I can’t quite work that one out.

“The fact that Nunez is new, you want to get him more integrated playing games, I’m not sure, but as I say he’s got two goals and provided an assist, but he had a very tough first half an hour, shall we say.”

Liverpool have struggled for attacking consistency throughout the current season, with a number of their attackers performing below expectations.

Let’s see if Klopp will keep Jota in his lineup when the Reds host Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
