The Reds legend could be an ideal choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Xabi Alonso has a secret release clause in his Bayer Leverkusen contract that allows him to leave for three particular clubs.
Alonso’s coaching career has begun on an excellent note at Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard has transformed the Black and Reds into one of the Bundesliga’s best teams this season, maintaining their leading place on the table ahead of Bayern Munich.
Several clubs have already shown interest in signing Alonso. But it seems the 41-year-old’s former clubs have a significant advantage over other interested parties.
According to SDZ, Leverkusen has agreed to terminate Alonso’s contract if an offer arrives from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, or Liverpool. In turn, the club would secure a compensation fee of around €15m.
Alonso became one of the Premier League’s best midfielders after his move to Liverpool from Real Sociedad in 2004. Following a legendary spell at Anfield, the Spaniard joined Real Madrid, where he continued his role as a reliable central midfielder for four years. The World Cup winner went on to end his career at Bayern Munich, where he won three consecutive Bundesliga trophies with the Bavarians.
Real Madrid have emerged as the favourites to sign Alonso next summer amid reports of Carlo Ancelotti’s possible departure.
