In what was a rather dull affair, reigning champions Liverpool and current league leaders Manchester United played out to a goalless stalemate at Anfield.
Liverpool and Manchester United failed to live up to the hype that built up prior to this fixture.
Asides from the rivalry that comes with this clash, the possible implications of this fixture made it certain it was going to be a fiery affair. However, it was the opposite outcome.
Liverpool dominated the early proceedings at Anfield but failed to create any clear cut chance at the Red Devils’ goal. For all of their nine attempts in the first half, only a solitary effort was on target.
Perhaps both sides were more intent on protecting their identities. Liverpool are unbeaten at Anfield in an ‘eternity’. In a similar fashion, United have not lost an away Premier League game this season.
The only real effort from the Red Devils in the first half came from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick.
The second half started as the first with Liverpool seeing more of the possession as they did in the first half. However, United remained disciplined and diligent in defense to keep the scores level.
The final quarter of the game was dominated by United and Alisson had to make two key saves to keep his side in the game.
In all, it ended in a disappointing stalemate that would leave the Red Devils happier with the result.
Liverpool are on a worrisome run of form and have now failed to score in their last three games.
In fact, they could drop to fourth in the Premier League should Manchester City win against Crystal Palace.
United remain top of the Premier League and can continue to dream of a title that has eluded them since the 2012/13 season.
