Messi has signed a deal with Socios to promote digital fan tokens ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Lionel Messi has signed a three-year deal worth more than $20m with cryptocurrency company Socios to promote digital fan tokens ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

The Paris Saint-Germain star is the latest to venture into the world of cryptocurrency and follows in the footsteps of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

According to Reuters, Messi’s move from Barcelona to PSG last summer included a cryptocurrency payment and the Argentine will promote Socios in the build-up to the Qatar World Cup later this year.

“Fans deserve to be recognised for their support. They deserve opportunities to influence the teams they love,” Messi said.

“Socios.com exists to enhance the fan experience, to enable fans to ‘be more’. I’m proud to join Socios.com’s mission to create a more connected and rewarding future for fans around the world.”

Socios have signed deals for over 130 sports organisations, including PSG, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Juventus. However, the firm’s business practices have come under the spotlight, leading to Premier League clubs reviewing their relationship with the organisation.

Arsenal are one of six Premier League clubs that have partnered with Socios along with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leeds United, and Manchester City.
