The Argentina captain entered the record books yet again mere days after lifting the World Cup trophy for the first time.
Lionel Messi’s World Cup-winning Instagram message has become the most-liked post on the social media platform.
On Sunday, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner finally got his hands on football’s biggest prize in the World Cup after helping Argentina overcome France on penalties in the final to end the South American nation’s 36-year wait for a third crown.
Messi later took to Instagram to share a message and pictures with his 403 million followers. At the time of writing, the post had over 61 million likes. It surpasses the previous record held by World Record Egg, which has more than 56 million likes for a simple photo of an egg.
Messi’s message on social media
In the caption of the Instagram post, Messi wrote: “Thank you very much to my family, to all who support me, and also to all who believed in us.
“We demonstrate once again that Argentines when we fight together and united we are capable of achieving what we set out to do. The merit belongs to this group, which is above individuals. It is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the dream of all Argentines… We did it!!!”
Messi played a central role in Argentina’s victory over France in the final, scoring two goals and converting his spot-kick in the shootout that followed from the 3-3 draw to ensure a 4-2 win on penalties.
The 35-year-old Paris Saint-Germain superstar won Man of the Match and the World Cup’s Golden Ball for the second time in his career.
