During a recent interview with Marca, Gary Lineker opened up about his experience when Diego Maradona scored the ‘Hand of God’ goal.

It’s not only Gary Lineker, the entire country of England has a bitter memory of the infamous Diego Maradona ‘Hand of God’ goal. He might not feel strongly about it now but he certainly has an opinion about it. When asked if he has forgiven the late legend, Lineker confirmed he has. However, he also thinks that the linesman might never forget what Diego did on that afternoon during the 1986 World Cup.

A goal that preceded the famous ‘Goal of the Century’ he also scored against England. This was a key moment in time during the conflict of the Falkland Islands between Argentina and the English. During that interview, Lineker also confirmed he considers Diego and Messi on a different level compared to the rest. Not even Cristiano Ronaldo is at that level for Gary. All the Cristiano fans will likely fume at these statements from the England legend but we would like to hear their opinion.

Lineker puts Diego and Messi together.

During an interview with Marca, Lineker responded to the question of whether he has forgiven Maradona for that infamous goal: “Of course. I think the one I haven’t forgotten about was the referee. His linesman saw the handball – I am certain. But I think he was afraid. Messi and Maradona gave us happiness. There were other greats, like the two Ronaldos, for example, but I consider them more as tremendous goalscorers.

“Diego and Leo did, and do, in each game, two or three things that neither I nor almost anyone did in an entire career. They play a different sport. I also love Cristiano. I respect him a lot, he is a great too… but my honest football opinion is that there is no comparison as to who is the best. Because of the things that Leo does. That said, it even hurts me to compare them, because they are both massive.”
