A Bayern Munich legend has tipped his hat to Robert Lewandowski after the striker finally got the taste of European glory.
Robert Lewandowski enjoyed his career-best season with Bayern Munich in 2019/20, putting up a remarkable tally of 55 goals through 47 appearances in all competitions.
34 of those strikes came in Bundesliga, as he led his side to their eight straight league title.
He was equally central in Bayern’s Champions League triumph and fell just two goals shy of matching Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record of most goals (17) in the competition.
It is widely accepted that the Polish marksman would have won the 2020 Ballon d’Or had it not gotten scrapped owing to the ongoing pandemic.
Regardless, in the eyes of Lothar Matthaus, Lewandowski is already the best player on the planet, a title shared by Ronaldo and FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi for quite a while.
Matthaus told Sky Deutschland: “Top scorer in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League. The best footballer in the world is Lewandowski. Period.
“When you see what this trophy means for this wonderful center-forward, how happy he was, what he gave and sacrificed for it, you know what it means to him.
“He has worked towards this for many years. He deserved this and the title of best footballer in the world.”
