The defending champions returned to the top of the table after an emphatic victory at the Bay Arena.

Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace as Bayern Munich thrashed Bayern Leverkusen in their Bundesliga meeting on Sunday.

Serge Gnabry was at the double as well while Thomas Muller also got on the scoresheet as Bayern cruised to a 5-1 win.

The result helped the Bavarians overtake rivals Borussia Dortmund and establish a one-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table.

It did not take too long for the deadlock to break at the Bay Arena, with Lewandowski getting on the of Dayot Upamecano’s low cross and back-heeling the ball into the net in the 3rd minute.

The reigning Best FIFA Men’s Player struck again at the half-hour mark, that time simply tapping home to take his tally of the season to an outstanding 15 goals in 11 games across all competitions.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men scored two more in the next five minutes, and the game was pretty much over as a contest at that point.

Bayern, though, were not done scoring as they added another in the 37th minute. Gnabry, after receiving a lovely pass from Leon Goretzka, produced a left-footed finish to add to the opponents’ misery.

The visitors cooled down in the second half which allowed the hosts to attempt a comeback. Manuel Neuer was called into action a few times and Patrick Schick did pull one back, but the afternoon ended in humiliation for Leverkusen.
