The Blues’ big-money signing has been sidelined with COVID-19 recently, but a return to face Rennes isn’t out of the question.

Frank Lampard is hopeful Kai Havertz will be available for Chelsea’s trip to Rennes in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen in September for a joint-club record fee of €80m, tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month and spent two weeks in isolation.

But Havertz returned to training last week and worked on his fitness in isolation after overcoming some ‘mild symptoms’ from the disease.

“I hope he is available,” said Lampard on Havertz’s prospects of facing Rennes as quoted by Goal.

“He’s been in for two, three days training doing some individual work and he looks pretty good.

“Kai is a naturally fit boy. I hope to have him traveling with us to Rennes on Tuesday. Maybe get some minutes. I’m not sure how many because it was two-week isolation, but he looks in good shape.”

The Blues boss will hope that is the case as victory at Roazhon Park will secure the club passage into the Champions League knockout stages.

Chelsea head into the match on the back of a solid 2-0 victory away to Newcastle United on Saturday, which has kept them two points within joint-Premier League leaders Tottenham and Liverpool in third.
