Frank Lampard shut down claims of favoritism towards Mason Mount by explaining how the Chelsea’s youngster talent merits his role.

Despite the big-names that arrived at Chelsea over the summer, Mount’s spot in the line-up remains unchallenged.

The 21-year-old broke into the team last season, managing a club-best 51 appearances in all competitions. In fact, Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace is the first time he’s failed to start this term.

Contrary to suggestions that Mount’s status as a homegrown product may win him favor over Lampard, however, the Chelsea boss has insisted his talent alone is what has won him regular opportunities.

“There’s a fascination with Mason, he’s homegrown and he’s a young player who’s got regularly into the team,” said Lampard as quoted on Goal.

“I sometimes understand that when you are homegrown and a young player there can be elements of people who look at that and ask questions as to why he’s been playing so many games. You know that better than anyone.

“I do understand the situation. What will overcome everything is Mason’s talent and attitude.”
