Frank Lampard has confirmed Edouard Mendy’s switch to Chelsea is near completion with the goalkeeper undergoing a medical.
Kepa Arrizabalaga’s struggles in goal prompted Chelsea to launch a search for a new goalkeeper. Several high-profile names were linked, including Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Manchester United’s Dean Henderson.
In recent weeks, however, a new name has cropped up in Rennes shot-stopper Mendy. After failing with the first bid, Chelsea are understood to have struck a £22m (€24m) deal to sign the Senegalese.
“Yes, Mendy is having a medical as we speak. Subject to that being okay then he will become our player,” confirmed Lampard in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Mendy’s arrival will certainly pile the pressure on Kepa to deliver as the duo competes for a spot in goal. However, it’s widely expected the former will instantly become Lampard’s first-choice.
The 25-year-old appears to be going from bad to worse after making yet another costly error against Liverpool last weekend.
He made a poor clearance to allow Sadio Mane to tap in his and Liverpool’s second goal in their 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge, condemning Chelsea to a first Premier League defeat of the season in the process.
