Ace Football presents a detailed view of the fixtures played in the 34th gameweek of the La Liga campaign.
Another matchday of La Liga action ended on Monday as teams locked horns with their opponents during the weekend.
Ten matches took place across Spain, with the league’s table seeing a few significant changes.
As we prepare for another exciting week of La Liga football, let’s review our main takeaways from Matchday 34.
Real Madrid win La Liga for the 35th time!
Real Madrid crushed Espanyol 4-0 on Saturday to secure the La Liga title. In-form Rodrygo scored a first-half brace before Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema sealed the victory for the Blancos in the second period.
Carlo Ancelotti became the first-ever manager to win all of Europe’s top-five leagues in his first season since returning to Santiago Bernabeu from Everton.
Real Madrid celebrate the league title as they sit 15 points above their arch-rivals Barcelona on the league table. They will now prepare to meet Man City in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.
Barca return to winning ways while reclaiming second spot
Following three defeats at Camp Nou, Barcelona beat Mallorca 2-1 to return to get back to winning ways at their home stadium.
It was not a brilliant performance from the Catalans, but they managed to reclaim the second spot anyway. Goals from Memphis Depay and Sergio Busquets won the game for the hosts, while Antonio Arenas scored Mallorca’s only goal of the night.
Xavi Hernandez’s side also saw Ansu Fati return to their squad after a three-month spell on the sidelines. Let’s see if the teenage star will start Barca’s upcoming match against Real Betis on Saturday.
Atletico continue unimpressive run against Bilbao
Atletico Madrid have been highly inconsistent in recent weeks. Following a goalless draw against Granada, the Rojiblancos failed to score again this weekend.
Athletic Bilbao defeated Diego Simeone’s men 2-0 at San Mames as the Madrid side slipped to fourth place on the league table.
Real Betis are now only three points away from taking Atletico’s place in the Champions League qualification zone. The Rojiblancos will return to La Liga action when they face Real Madrid on Sunday.
Granada revives survival hopes with last-minute goal
Granada have not won any of their last five games, but three well-deserved draws have got them closer to escaping the relegation zone.
This weekend, they fell 1-0 behind against Celta Vigo at the 72nd minute. However, they managed to escape the defeat with a last-minute goal from Darwin Machis.
Granada will now prepare to face fellow relegation-strugglers Mallorca next Saturday. Let’s see if they can finally leapfrog Cadiz, who are one point above them in the 17th spot.
Villarreal stunned by Alaves ahead of Liverpool clash
Following a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League, Villarreal lost 2-1 against Alaves in La Liga.
Unai Emery made several changes to the lineup that played against Liverpool. However, Villarreal’s struggle for goals was evident throughout the game.
Victor Laguardia opened the scoring with an early goal for Alaves, with Gonzalo Escalante then doubling their lead. Samuel Chukwueze got Villarreal back into the game at the beginning of the second half.
However, the Yellow Submarines could not find enough chances to find the equalizer until the final whistle. Emery’s side stay seventh on the league table, six points away from the Europa League spot.
Having already eliminated Juventus and Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Villarreal will look to surprise Liverpool in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
