World Cup winner Marcel Desailly believes Kylian Mbappe should not consider a transfer to Manchester City because of Pep Guardiola.

Kylian Mbappe is not suited for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s brand of football, according to Marcel Desailly.

With his contract at Paris Saint-Germain to expire next summer, Mbappe’s future is under a cloud. PSG hope he’ll sign a new deal. But even if that does happen, he is still widely expected to leave the Ligue 1 club soon.

Several teams may be tempted to throw their hat in the ring for Mbappe, including City.

“I don’t think Mbappe is meant to play for City. There is too much discipline,” Desailly told Gambling Zone.

“In France, we say that the way City play doesn’t leave much room for individuals. With all their passing, they don’t really suit players who want to take defenders on. They pass, they move. [Bernardo] Silva and [Jack] Grealish both have the ability to play number ten, but that’s been killed by Guardiola’s philosophy.

“He wants them to stay on their side, get the ball, show speed, play the balls, and receive the ball back, and play one-twos. Mbappe doesn’t do that. He uses the ball to make the difference.”

As it stands, Mbappe can sign a pre-transfer agreement with a non-French club in January. This will stand if he chooses to not sign a new deal at PSG, which would make him a free agent in 2024.

Real Madrid, a club that has eyed him for the last couple of years, are favorites to sign him.
