Kylian Mbappé has announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, describing his future as “very exciting” and stating that it is the “right moment” to move on from the Ligue 1 club.
The French star, who revealed last week that he would be leaving PSG when his contract expires this summer, is widely expected to join Real Madrid.
Mbappé, who was named Ligue 1’s player of the season for the fifth consecutive year at an awards ceremony in Paris on Monday, reflected on his time in the league. “It’s a chapter of my life that is ending. Ligue 1 has been a major part of my career,” he said. “Now I’m turning a new page in my life. What comes next is very exciting, but that’s another matter… I want to thank my family, who’ve always supported me in the good and bad times. I know it was very important for my father that I made history in Ligue 1 before leaving, and I think, with humility, that I’ve done that.”
Mbappé has spent nearly a decade in Ligue 1, starting with Monaco and moving to PSG in 2017. Throughout his career, he has been a target for Real Madrid, coming particularly close to joining them in 2022 before deciding to renew his contract with PSG at the last moment. However, ESPN reported in February that Mbappé is set to join Madrid this summer, a move he confirmed on Friday without specifying his next destination.
“I think that in life you have to choose the right moment for everything,” Mbappé told journalists. “The only thing I know is that I’m leaving PSG. As for the rest, it isn’t the right moment to know that.”
LaLiga president Javier Tebas claimed on Monday that Mbappé would be signing a five-year contract with Madrid, keeping him at the club until 2029. “He’ll be at Madrid next season,” Tebas told the Argentinian newspaper Ole. “He’s one of the best players in the world. But they also have Vinícius [Júnior] and [Jude] Bellingham. Madrid are going to have a great squad, although of course, that doesn’t guarantee winning championships.”
Real Madrid’s recent Champions League success—winning the competition five times since 2014 and reaching this season’s final against Borussia Dortmund—has been a key factor in Mbappé’s decision. PSG, despite winning Ligue 1 this season, were eliminated from the Champions League at the semifinal stage by Dortmund.
