The France captain capped off his final game of the season in record-breaking fashion.
Kylian Mbappe set yet another milestone in a tight Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday that saw France secure a 1-0 victory against a 10-man Greece.
Mbappe proved his mettle by scoring a second-half penalty, making him the best French scorer over a season with a whopping 54 goals for both club and country. This feat surpasses the record set by Just Fontaine in 1957/58. Not only that, but it also helped the Paris Saint-Germain forward move level with Erling Haaland. That said, the Norway and Manchester City striker will have the opportunity to finish top scorer among those playing in the five top European leagues when his national team takes on Cyprus on Tuesday.
Monday’s victory saw France open up a six-point lead over Greece at the top of Group B. The second-placed visitors were down to 10 men in the 69th minute when Konstantinos Mavropanos saw red. However, with a game in hand over their French rivals, the battle for first place is by no means over.
France, though, will prove tough to beat. The Blues have won all four of their qualifiers to nil and scored nine goals. They claimed a 3-0 win against Gibraltar on Saturday.
With such an impressive performance, France will be ready to take on Ireland at home on September 7, while Greece will travel to the Netherlands.
