During today’s press conference ahead of Liverpool’s next match, Jurgen Klopp spoke about the power he has to make transfer decisions.
You would think Jurgen Klopp has a lot of power to make transfer decisions at Liverpool given his past track record at Borussia Dortmund. However, the model that Fenway Sports Group has is tied to a mathematical model that is based on facts. When the club decides to sign players, they look at their stats and their potential for progress in the upcoming years of their careers.
Jurgen Klopp also has a great eye for that but he prefers to leave that aspect to the professionals who brought him the players he currently has. Although he always gives his educated opinion on who is the ideal player to sign, the final call doesn’t rest on him. There are owners who manage the money and have the power to make these calls. The German boss worries a lot more about the technical aspect of the squad. Once he gets his new players, his job is to make sure he gets the best out of them.
Klopp’s surprising statement about transfers.
At Borussia Dortmund, Klopp had more say in the matter of the players he could bring to the club. Today, he lends his contacts with several clubs in Europe who are willing to negotiate with the Reds during the transfer windows. But he made everyone jump at the notion that he doesn’t make the final call on a player. Pulling the trigger on a transfer tends to be the manager’s decision but it seems different at Liverpool.
As per BBC Sports, this is what Klopp said on the matter: “I cannot decide if we do something in the transfer market or not. Of course somebody else is making the decisions. It was always like this. We discuss the situation pretty much on a daily basis, could we improve something or not and we make recommendations but I cannot spend the money. I never did. I don’t want to confuse anybody. I just said what I said.”
