The Reds boss offered injury updates on some key players ahead of their latest Premier League trip to Brentford this weekend.

Jurgen Klopp has announced that Thiago Alcantara will probably remain absent until after the international break in October.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich midfielder has struggled with a calf problem since Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, and he now appears set for a spell on the sidelines.

“It’s not 100 per cent clear when Thiago will be back,” said Klopp in a press conference on Friday ahead of this weekend’s visit to Brentford.

“It’s a muscle in the calf issue, so after the international break probably – I don’t think there’s anything earlier possible. We will have to see.”

Keita out, but three players set for returns

Naby Keita, who sustained a foot problem in the 3-0 EFL Cup win over Norwich on Tuesday, is out for the Brentford match this Saturday.

“[It’s] nothing really serious, but it keeps him out of the next game for sure – and maybe a little bit longer, we have to see,” said Klopp. “It’s nothing serious, but it’s obviously painful and we have to see how we can deal with it.”

The Liverpool manager also confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold is back from illness, James Milner has recovered from a knock, and Roberto Firmino has returned to training from a hamstring injury.

The latter, who has been unavailable since the end of August, is in contention to return for Liverpool.
