The Magpies are reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Kieran Trippier.

Newcastle have started their efforts to bolster their squad in the January transfer window. The Magpies, who have been eyeing a move for Kieran Trippier for months, are now close to signing him.

According to 90min and the Athletic, Newcastle have agreed to sign Trippier on a £15m deal. The player will reportedly sign a three-and-a-half-year deal while earning the highest wages in the club’s history.

The former Tottenham defender will earn 50% more than what he currently makes at Atletico. He will also have no release clause, meaning he will stay at the club in case of relegation.

This will make Trippier the first Newcastle signing since the Saudi takeover. The club hope to avoid relegation by improving their squad as the owners prepare to kickstart a new era. English sources claim Newcastle are keen to add a new central defender and two midfielders in January.

The Magpies are facing serious danger of relegation as they sit 19th in the Premier League with 11 points. They have not been able to win any of their last four games, conceding 12 goals in the process.

Following a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, Newcastle will face Cambridge United in FA Cup on Saturday. Howe’s side will then return to Premier League action with a game against Watford a week later.
