Giorgio Chiellini has left the Italy squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Switzerland.
Italy will face Switzerland in their next World Cup qualifying game on Friday. Whoever wins the match will be only one point away from securing the qualification. However, the Azzurri will have to play without their experienced captain.
Chiellini has suffered an injury during Italy’s preparation for the game. The veteran defender has returned to Turin for further tests, with Juventus issuing an official statement about his injury.
“The scans showed inflammation of the muscle tendon junction of the left Achilles tendon. Chiellini’s condition will be monitored daily.” reads the club’s statement.
Chiellini is not the only missing player in the Italy squad. Ciro Immobile, Nicolo Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini are all unavailable for Italy’s upcoming matches.
Following their game against Switzerland, Italy will face Northern Ireland in their next World Cup qualifier on Monday.
Meanwhile, Moise Kean returns to Juventus’ team training, hoping to reach full fitness before the end of the international break. Mattia De Sciglio, who is suffering from a Biceps femoris muscle injury, is also continuing his physiotherapy treatment.
