The German manager has come under pressure for Liverpool’s poor run of results in recent weeks.

Jurgen Klopp has insisted Liverpool are still in the race to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

A goalless draw against Crystal Palace saw the Reds stay in the seventh spot on the league table last weekend. Klopp’s men have struggled for consistency all season, failing to climb up to the Champions League zone.

Given Liverpool’s heavy defeat against Real Madrid in the first leg of their UCL tie, Liverpool are aware of how crucial the top-four race is.

The Reds were in a similar situation in the 2020-21 campaign. However, they eventually qualified for the next season’s Champions League after a brilliant run of results in the final stages of the campaign.

Asked whether those examples can help Liverpool regain their best form, Klopp responded: “It helps because it was us so you don’t have to tell them [the players] a story of another club but we have a lot of stories to tell of what went really well in the last few years, of long winning streaks.

“History is not allowed to hinder you but also you cannot rely on what you have done before. We have to be ready to go and do it because every game is different.

“You have an opponent who wants the points as well and we have to go against that. We have to create, we have to attack, we have to defend, we have to protect and I know the boys can do that.

“If there is a club that can do it I really think it is us. I really think that because all of the things we have achieved in these last years we achieved together. Nothing would have happened without the team or without the crowd.”
