The German has explained the reason behind his shock decision to leave his position as Liverpool’s manager at the end of the current campaign.

Jurgen Klopp has explained that he will leave Liverpool as he is ‘running out of energy’ to coach the club.

On Friday, Liverpool announced Klopp will vacate his role as the club’s manager in the summer. This will bring an end to a memorable eight-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield. During this time, he has led the Reds to six trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League titles.

His contract at Anfield was due to expire in 2026.

Why will Klopp leave Liverpool?

Klopp first shared his concerns with Liverpool over his future in November. While talking about future transfers and club plans, the 56-year-old said that he was unsure about his future involvement.

In an interview with the club’s media, he then cited a lack of energy and a desire to pursue a ‘normal life’ as factors behind his shock decision to leave Liverpool.

As such, Klopp chose to confirm his decision to leave Liverpool now, citing the need for clarity and an orderly transition in the future. He does, however, remain fully committed to seeing out the rest of the campaign.

What has Klopp said so far?

“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything,” Klopp said.

“But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I would have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.

“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth.”

“I came here, and I said it on the first day, as a normal guy,” Klopp added.

“I am still a normal guy, I just don’t live a normal life for too long now. I don’t want to wait until I am too old to have a normal life. I need to at least give it a try at one point to see how it is and [if] I will miss it. As I said, I never really had this before so I need to give it a try and it is the right moment for me and I think it is the right moment for the club because I can’t do the job from next year on anymore as I did it before, and then I am not the right one anymore.”

Who will also leave Liverpool?

Klopp’s assistants Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, along with elite development coach Vitor Matos, will also leave Liverpool.

Lijnders wants to focus on his own career in management.
