Frank Lampard declares it is Timo Werner who shall henceforth be stepping forward for taking the spot-kicks for Chelsea.

Chelsea marched past Rennes in Wednesday’s Champions League game, registering an emphatic 3-0 win over the French outfit.

Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham were on the scoreline, with the former hitting a brace from spot-kicks and the latter putting the game beyond doubt five minutes into the second half.

Those were Werner’s first penalty kicks for the Blues as it was Jorginho who used to take them previously.

Jorginho had maintained a perfect record from 12 yards until he missed one in the 2-0 loss against Liverpool in Premier League matchday 2. He made two misses in a row after he hit the post in the 4-0 Champions League over Krasnodar.

After the full-time whistle at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard was asked why Werner stepped up to take both the penalties despite Jorginho being present on the pitch.

“It’s harsh from me, isn’t it? He missed two recently and Timo came in and obviously scored one in our last game,” Lampard told BT Sport, explaining his thought process.

“I had a conversation with Jorginho. His answer was perfect for a professional. He doesn’t care who takes them, he just wants to score and that’s how he approaches it.

“Timo is the taker at the moment and he took them very emphatically, so I’m happy.”
