The Portuguese star hasn’t been able to establish himself as a starter at Bayern.
Joao Cancelo didn’t join his Bayern Munich teammates to celebrate their victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Thomas Tuchel started his Bayern spell with a 4-1 victory as the Bavarians reclaimed Bundesliga’s top spot. The German boss started Benjamin Pavard at the right-hand side of his four-man backline.
Cancelo started another crucial game on Bayern’s bench, continuing his underwhelming loan spell at Allianz Arena. Tuchel brought in the Portugal international in the 80th minute, but he failed to impress as Bayern conceded a late goal from his side.
Speaking to Bild on Sunday, Bayern director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “These are emotions after the game. It’s not a problem. It’s normal for a player to be disappointed when they don’t play.
“Cancelo is a top player and will get his playing time.”
Cancelo arrived at Bayern on a mid-season loan deal after his reported row with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Since then, the 28-year-old has made seven Bundesliga appearances, registering one goal and two assists.
An upcoming Champions League clash against Manchester City could see Cancelo face his former side. The Bavarians will travel to Manchester for the first leg on April 11.
Before that, however, they should meet Freiburg twice, first in the DFB Pukal and later in the Bundesliga.
