Jesus Navas dedicated Sevilla’s record-extending sixth Europa League trophy to the late Jose Antonio Reyes and Antonio Puerta.
Jesus Navas played a prominent role as Sevilla pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Inter Milan 3-2 in Cologne on Friday night.
The 34-year-old Spaniard refused to hide his emotions during the post-final interview, devoting his team’s success to former players Reyes and Puerta.
“It is the most special day for being able to raise the cup as captain, with my Sevilla,” the Sevilla captain said, as relayed by the Daily Mail.
“This is for all the people who are not with us anymore, for Puerta, Reyes… my godfather who has passed away. We are all captains here.”
Navas was the one to carry Puerta’s coffin at his funeral and is currently wearing his former teammate’s No16 shirt to honor the memory of him.
Meanwhile, Reyes was the last Sevilla captain to lift the Europa League trophy before the ex-Manchester City star on Friday night.
The legendary Spaniard, who died last year in a car accident, racked up over 250 appearances for the Andalusian outfit over two separate spells.
