Bayern have decided against signing Boateng despite his impressive performance in training.
Jerome Boateng has revealed his plan to play abroad after failing to secure a return to Bayern Munich.
Bayern’s limited options in defence forced them to consider a move for their former centre-back. However, widespread criticism from the club’s fan base prevented them from signing Boateng, who has been previously involved in a domestic abuse case.
“Joining Bayern would have been a matter of the heart to me, as it’s my former club,” Boateng told Bild.
“I’m taking the good sporting impressions I’ve shown at this level into new opportunities and tasks. My future now lies abroad.
“I can only promise a new club that I will help them achieve their goals with my professionalism and full of energy. I’m far from having reached the end yet.”
Boateng played for ten years at Bayern Munich after his €13.5 move from Manchester City in 2011. The former German international claimed two Champions League trophies, nine Bundesliga titles, and five DFB-Pokal cups at Allianz Arena before leaving the club for Lyon in 2021.
Boateng has remained out of work since leaving the Ligue 1 giants in July. A move to Saudi Arabia could be appealing to the 35-year-old, who has struggled to find a new club in Europe.
