After a decade of overseeing the two highest-tier leagues in Spain, Javier Tebas has resigned to put his name forward for another term.

Javier Tebas has formally resigned from his post as LaLiga president to bring forth another election.

Tebas, who has served as the LaLiga president since April 2013, was due to end his third term on December 23. He will now put his name forward in the upcoming presidential election in hopes of winning a fourth term.

“A few minutes ago I presented my resignation as President of LaLiga prior to the end of my term, which ended on December 23,” Tebas posted on X.

“A new electoral process will open in which I will present myself, so I will request the endorsement and trust of the clubs to take on the challenges at hand.”

The election process for a new president in LaLiga typically lasts around one month. To avoid conflicting with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) presidential elections in the first trimester of 2024, the schedule has been adjusted.

Tebas is regarded as the favorite to win the upcoming LaLiga election. The 61-year-old Spaniard went uncontested in the elections held in 2013 and 2019. Reportedly, he also holds favor with the presidents of various Spanish league clubs.
