Jamie O’Hara thinks it would be wrong for Manchester United to spend above £100m on Jadon Sancho in the current market.
Manchester United saw their summer pursuit of Jadon Sancho take a major hit this week.
Borussia Dortmund have so far held out for €120m (£108m) for the 20-year-old and were not ready to entertain offers of any less.
United offered significantly close to that amount but saw their offer knocked back by the German side.
Failure to meet the August 10th deadline set by Dortmund ultimately means Sancho will remain at the club next season as confirmed by the club’s director.
Regardless of whatever outcome, they cannot justify spending in excess of £100m on one player in this climate.
In a time where the ‘richest’ of clubs are struggling financially, the pundit believes a fair price for Sancho right now will be around £60-70m.
“If Manchester United do get Sancho over the line, then they’re going to be a real force,” the former Tottenham midfielder said on the talkSPORT Breakfast.
“They’ve been fantastic since lockdown and I thought they ended the season brilliantly.”
“I’d love to see Jadon Sancho in the Premier League… but it’s a lot of money if they’re talking over £100m, especially in the current situation.”
“I don’t think £100m is right. £60m or £70m for him, fair enough… but if you’re going to pay top-end in this current situation, I just don’t see how that can be right.”
“So as much as I’d love him to come, if they have to wait a season, then so be it.”
“It would be really stupid while all over the world people are struggling, people are losing their jobs, there are redundancies… and then Man United go and spent £100m on one player – that’s my issue with it.”
“If it was a normal market then £100m is worth it for a 20-year-old who is going to be one of your best players.”
It could perhaps be a blessing in disguise if United wait until next summer to sign Sancho.
