Gennaro Gattuso has warned the fans against putting unnecessary pressure on Victor Osimhen after his spectacular start at Napoli.
Napoli emerged victorious in the race to sign Victor Osimhen, who had been generating headlines last season with his outstanding displays for Lille.
21-year old Osimhen signed a long-term contract with the Italian side last month to complete his €70 million transfer.
And the forward has already started giving out hints that Napoli were not wrong at making him the most expensive player in the club’s history.
Osimhen found the back of the net three times in rapid succession while also claimed an assist in the 11-0 mauling of L’Aquila, who play three divisions beneath Napoli, in a preseason friendly.
Much is expected from the young Nigerian, who will be taking up the number nine role for Gennaro Gattuso’s side in the coming season.
Gattuso understands the capabilities of his new recruit but warns the fans no to keep their hopes too high.
“It’s not like we suddenly signed Pele or Maradona, we simply brought in a player with certain characteristics that can help us,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“It’s too easy to get excited now, we’ve got to give him time and let him work, not put pressure on.
“He is an important player and we paid a lot for him, but there were no doubts he would give us something different that we haven’t had in my time here. There’s a long way to go.”
