Webley will host an exciting ‘Finalissima’ match between Italy and Argentina next year.

UEFA and CONMEBOL have struck a deal that will see Italy and Argentina face off in London. The Champions of Europe and South America will meet in the ‘Finalisma’ on June 1.

The two governing bodies have also confirmed the match will take place in London. Despite their lack of clarification over the stadium, Sky Sports have reported the match will take place at Wembley.

Argentina managed to end their 28-year major trophy drought as they won the Copa America trophy. Lionel Messi spearheaded Argentina’s incredible campaign, which also resulted in winning his seventh Ballon d’Or.

Italy also managed to make history this summer as they won the European Championship after 53 years. The Azzurri used their revived form under Roberto Mancini to break England’s heart in the Wembley final.

They will return to the stadium in June to face Argentina, with whom they have a close rivalry. In their 15 games against each other, Italy have won six games while Argentina have five victories.

Following the announcement, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin spoke about the agreement with the South American confederation.

He said: “There is a long tradition of cooperation between UEFA and CONMEBOL, as could be witnessed over the years with competitions such as the Artemio Franchi Trophy and the Intercontinental Cup, and it is with great pride that we are relaunching such a prestigious national team trophy to the delight of football lovers across the globe.

“We are very much looking forward to explore new opportunities together and we are eagerly awaiting the Finalissima in London in June 2022.

“I would like to thank Alejandro Dominguez [CONMEBOL president] for his dedicated involvement in this project and for his outstanding work at the helm of South American football.”
