Italy boss Roberto Mancini defended Jorginho following a shocking penalty incident in the last stages of their game against Switzerland.

Italy manager Roberto Mancini backed Jorginho following the midfielder’s injury-time penalty miss against Switzerland in the World Cup qualifiers on Friday night.

Had the Chelsea star buried the spot-kick, Azzurri would have seized a victory, but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw. With equal points on the table in Group C, the qualification drama will go on to the final showdown.

Instead of showing signs of disappointment, Mancini extended his support towards Jorginho and said that what he did was the right thing to do at that moment.

At the post-match interview with RAI Sport, Mancini said: “We missed a penalty in the first leg and one in the return, these things happen,”

“Jorginho felt like kicking it and it’s right that he did. He is one of the [best] penalty takers in the team.

“In the first half, we suffered and struggled. Then we came out well but missed the winning goal.”

In addition, full-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo also backed his teammate by saying: “Jorginho is a great champion and our penalty taker. We will help him get through this moment.”
