One of Serie A’s most prominent club owners just positioned himself in favor of the controversial European Super League in an interview.

The European Super League just got approved by a second club chairman after Josep Maria Bartomeu did it when he resigned. Inter Milan’s Steven Zhang just spoke about the possibility of creating this league that would effectively kill the rest of the less-competitive institutions.

In his view, football is more a business than a sport and this goes directly in the line with what he wants. Knowing how these moguls think, it wouldn’t surprise anybody if other club owners or chairmen followed suit. We have a gut feeling that Bartomeu and Zhang is only the beginning of a large process in which several interests will be made public.

This European Super League is starting to become more public and alarming the smaller clubs. There’s a good chance we will begin looking at fresh statements from other owners such as Manchester United’s Glazer family. Even Florentino Perez would be keen on creating this new tournament.

Steven Zhang is only the first step.

It happened during an interview with Sky Sport Italy. Inter Milan’s owner revealed his intentions to support this initiative and how it would benefit world football in general. He used the global pandemic as the perfect excuse to push this agenda without any major repercussions if it materializes.

This is what Zhang said: “I am always in favor of the idea of improving and evolving our product. We have to analyze the current situation and our work after the pandemic. Which is often not suitable for consumers who have to wake up at six in the morning or even at three. It will be very difficult.

“For this, we must present our skills to an audience that is able to take advantage of our offer. At any time and in the form you want. In any context. We will offer increasingly advanced and competitive products.”
