Following an excellent first season at Roma, could Tammy Abraham be the next go-to guy in the Gunners attack?

Tammy Abraham should consider a transfer to Arsenal if he wants to return to the Premier League, according to ex-Liverpool star John Barnes.

The former Chelsea striker has enjoyed a superb debut campaign at AS Roma. Upon completing a €40 million move to Italy last summer, he has scored 15 goals in 30 games in Serie A.

His form has stirred talk of a return to England. Chelsea have a buy-back clause worth around €80 million. It’s understood the clause won’t be valid this summer. However, Barnes thinks Abraham would be better off joining the Blues’ London rivals Arsenal instead.

‘Arsenal would be a fantastic club for him’

“It all depends on how Chelsea want to play next season,” the retired England international told BonusCode Bets.

“Roma obviously suits Abraham better, that’s why he’s scored so many goals.

“You have to find the football that suits you. The fact that he’s scored goals doesn’t mean he’s going to come back and score goals for Chelsea. [Thomas] Tuchel won’t want to play both Abraham and [Romelu] Lukaku.

“If Abraham wants to come back to England, and it’s not going to work at Chelsea, Arsenal would be a fantastic club for him. They need a center-forward – [Alexandre] Lacazette looks like he’s going, [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang’s not there, and [Eddie] Nketiah may not be the answer.

“If Abraham wants to come back to London, it would be a good move for him and a good move for Arsenal.”

What next for the Gunners?

Reports have heavily tipped Arsenal to sign a new striker this summer as Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah will both be out of contract.

Until then, however, the Gunners will focus on reviving their top-four bid in the Premier League. They return to action on Saturday at home to Brighton in the Premier League, hoping to put a 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday behind them.
