Presidential candidate Victor Font still wants Xavi to head his ‘sporting project’ at Barcelona, but has now suggested Koeman could remain.

Victor Front has made headlines in recent weeks for his outspoken views on the troubles at Barcelona as he plots to displace Josep Maria Bartomeu as president in the upcoming elections on March 2021.

He even made a bold claim shortly before Ronald Koeman’s appointment as manager on August 19 by vowing to replace the Dutchman with Xavi Hernandez if he became president.

“If we win, Koeman will not be the coach,” Font told ‘El Laguero’ on Cadena SER.

“He is a myth of Barcelona. We have to thank him for wanting to take up the challenge, wish him the best of success and if necessary he can contribute to the project in some way.”

But Font has now backtracked on these comments, claiming they were misinterpreted. The Catalan also suggested Koeman could remain in an undefined capacity, even though he still wants Xavi to lead his sporting project.

“It was taken out of context,” Font explained to talkSPORT about his earlier comments.

“What I said was that in the last seven years we have been working on designing a project, a project that has many different pieces, and obviously the sports organization is a very relevant part of that complex puzzle.

“We’ve been working on what the sports organization would look like with the leadership of Xavi Hernandez, and what I said is, if we have the honor of being chosen by the members and we become the board of the club, we would like to implement the project we’ve been working on.

“Xavi as the leader of the sports organization would be making the decision of how to handle the situation of Koeman, and I’m sure that if Koeman does well Xavi will take care of that in the right way.”
