A narrow win was enough for the USMNT to secure their place in the knock-out stage.

The USA defeated Iran 1-0 in their World Cup game on Tuesday. A hard-fought victory sent the USA to the knock-out round as the Group B runner-ups.

Pulisic to rescue!

USA came into the game knowing they would most likely need a victory against Iran to reach the next round. Meanwhile, their opponents could’ve qualified by clinching a draw.

The USMNT started the game by dominating the possession as they gradually increased the pressure on Iran’s backline.

Following a few missed chances, Iran’s resistance finally broke in the 38th minute.

Sergino Dest crossed the ball into the box after a run from the left flank. His assist found Christian Pulisic, who whipped it home from close range with a flying shot.

USA thought they had doubled their lead just before halftime, but Timothy Weah’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Iran tried to take control of the game at the beginning of the second period. But Carlos Queiroz’s side failed to create serious chances as USA maintained their defensive integrity.

Saman Ghoddos came the closest when he received a loose ball inside USA’s box. But his 65th-minute shot wasn’t on target.

USA’s brilliant defence paid off when the referee blew the final whistle. Gregg Berhalter’s side reached the last-16 round of the World Cup behind England, who defeated Wales 3-0 elsewhere in Group B.

USA will face Netherland in the next round, while England take on Senegal.
