The 173rd Derby della Madonnina in the Serie A takes place on Saturday evening between Inter and AC Milan at the San Siro, with both out to prove their status as the best team in Lombardy.

Although the most recent showdown between the city rivals had been overshadowed by a series of positive COVID-19 tests. Six Inter players, including Milan Skriniar and Ashley Young, have contracted the virus. While AC Milan assistant coach Daniele Bonera has recently tested positive himself.

Despite the breakout of positive cases, though, the Milan derby appears set to go ahead. There is certainly a fair bit to relish. Not only are both sides in the Serie A top-four, but they’re in reasonably good form.

Inter Milan Form & Stats

The international break did Inter more harm than good, with Alexis Sanchez returning injured. Several players, mostly from the South American nations, reported back to training late. That, on top of his growing list of missing players, has left Antonio Conte rueing the lack of time to prepare for the Milan derby.

The Nerazzurri boss is well aware victory is necessary after dropping points for the first time this season away to Lazio. That game, in particular, was a disappointment. The visitors controlled most of the game, yet left Rome with just a point to show for their efforts.

Although the in-form pair of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez should still Inter plenty of reasons for optimism, having scored three goals each already. The club also boast a strong head-to-head record against AC Milan. The only real issue is the lack of depth at Conte’s disposal. It could open the door for an interesting second half as the players become fatigued.

  • Unbeaten in their last 11 league games (W7 D4).

AC Milan Form & Stats

Stefano Pioli’s side have carried over their strong post-lockdown form into the new campaign, winning all three of their games. It’s made them the joint-leaders in the Serie A alongside Atalanta. Now the aim is to make a statement on Saturday by beating local rivals Inter. Not only would it be a sweet victory, but it would suggest a change in the pecking order in Milan.

Several players have thrived under Pioli’s watch, including Theo Hernandez, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Franck Kessie. There’s no excluding the ageless Zlatan Ibrahimovic either. The big Swede would, no doubt, love to get one over old club Inter.

AC Milan head into the clash in fine form, having not lost a league game since March 8. That’s a run of 15 games without defeat, with 12 wins in tow.

Key Team Stats
  • Won their last five league games.
  • Haven’t conceded a league goal this season, nor in their last four games.
  • Over 2.5 goals scored in their last five league games.
