The Nerazzurri have renewed the contract of their captain ahead of the next season.

Samir Handanovic has signed a new one-year contract at Inter.

Since joining the Nerazzurri from Udinese in 2007, Handanovic has remained a reliable keeper between Inter’s posts.

The club added former Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana to their ranks earlier this summer. But, that has not stopped them from signing a new contract with Handanovic.

The keeper has made 439 appearances for Inter, winning the Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa titles. Last season, he made 15 clean sheets in 37 league appearances as the Nerazzurri finished second in Serie A.

With the arrival of Onana, Handanovic will face more competition to secure his spot in Inter’s lineup. However, it is unlikely that Simone Inzaghi would use Onana as his regular choice.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inzaghi will consider none of the two players as his ‘first-choice’ keeper. Instead, the Italian boss is planning to rotate them throughout the campaign.

Training alongside Handanovic will provide a chance for the Cameroonian star to learn from one of the best keepers in Serie A.

Onana himself, however, is by no means inexperienced. The 26-year-old won three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cups during his time at Ajax. He also played a key role in his side’s sensational run to the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals.
