Far from their usual high standards, the Bianconeri suffered their second defeat of the season at the hands of their bitter rivals.
It was simply not Juventus’ night. The defending champions were coming into the match on the back of some strong results but their form accounted for nothing as they were outplayed by an intense Inter Milan side.
Inter did not wait too long to give their bitter rivals the first blow. Just 12 minutes in, Arturo Vidal fired home after meeting Nicolo Barella’s beautiful cross with his head.
Had Lautaro Martinez put on his shooting boots, the hosts could have gone into the break with a comfortable two-goal lead. A powerful Romelu Lukaku shot was parried away by Wojciech Szczesny, the ball dropped in Martinez’s path but he missed in front of an open goal.
Antonio Conte’s men continued to trouble the opposition defense in the first half but – perhaps due to their own shortcomings in the final third – went into the break with a narrow lead.
Seven minutes after the break, Inter handed their second blow to Juve. Alessandro Bastoni sprayed a sumptuous cross all the way back from defense with Barella latching onto it. The Italian midfielder beautifully brought down the ball before smashing it into the roof of the net.
The Bianconeri’s only highlight came when Cristiano Ronaldo scored very early in the game but the goal was ruled out as the Portuguese was found offside.
Juventus now sit at fifth in the standings, seven points behind AC Milan. Inter are level on points with the table-toppers at 40 but sit at second due to an inferior goal difference.
