Inter are closing in on signing Matthias Ginter, who will become a free agent next summer.

Earlier this week, Matthias Ginter announced he will leave Borussia Monchengladbach for free at the end of the season. The player is spending the last six months of his current contract, with several clubs eyeing a summer move.

However, Inter have emerged as the frontrunners to seal the deal. According to Goal, Inter are favourites to sign the 2014 World Cup winner next summer. They have been in negotiations with the player’s representatives since November and are even open to a January move. However, Gladbach are keen to keep the defender amid their rough run of form.

Following a move from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, Ginter quickly established himself as a key defender at Gladbach. The German international thanked the club and its fans in his departure announcement.

“After a series of negotiations, I have decided not to extend the contract which will expire in the summer,” the defender wrote on Instagram. “After five excellent years at Borussia Monchengladbach, it is very difficult for me to take this step.

“But I have decided to take another path in my career for my personal and professional growth. I owe a lot to Borussia, and I will always have the club and its fans in my heart.”

Inter might be the frontrunners in the transfer race to sign Ginter, but they are not the only interested club. Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also following the situation closely. Since a January move is unlikely, further developments might occur before the summer window.
