Beppe Marotta proudly recalls making a €100 million profit on Paul Pogba, a transfer he oversaw during his time at Juventus.

Paul Pogba joined the Manchester United youth academy in 2009, at the age of 16, and quickly rose through the ranks to earn a promotion to the senior team two years later.

The midfielder, however, grew frustrated with the lack of trust shown in him by then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson as well as the lack of consistent playing time.

Eventually, he signed for Juventus on a free transfer in 2012 after refusing to renew his contract with Man United.

Fast forwards four years from then, and Pogba had established himself into one of the best midfielders in all of Europe after having led Juve to four successive Serie A titles among other domestic honors.

The Frenchman was also one of the standout performers in the 2014 World Cup and was honored with the competition’s Best Young Player award.

Realizing the mistake they had made, Man United broke the bank to bring him back to Old Trafford, a transfer that made him the world’s costliest player back then.

Inter Milan director Beppe Marotta, who oversaw several profitable deals during his time as a director at Juventus, believes Pogba’s transfer was his best piece of business.

“A director tries to bring players in relatively cheap and sell them on at a significant profit,” said Marotta, according to Football Italia.

“The ultimate version of that was I think the best deal of my career: Pogba, who we strangely got for free and sold him back to the same club for €100m.”
