An easy win over Roma sent Inter past their title-rivals AC Milan.
Inter defeated Roma 3-1 in their Serie A game on Saturday. The Nerazzurri claimed a vital win at San Siro while Roma remained fifth on the league table.
Inter are unstoppable!
Inter came into the game on the back of their 3-0 win over Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Similar to that game, the Nerazzurri gained possession early on and started pushing for the opener with confidence.
It took them half an hour to break the deadlock through Denzel Dumfries. Following a brilliant through pass from Hakan Calhanoglu, the Dutchman defeated Roma’s keeper in a one-on-one situation to put Inter ahead.
The Nerazzurri continued their attacks as Roma showed no momentum in their efforts to score the equalizer. Simone Inzaghi’s side then doubled their lead through Marcelo Brozovic’s stunning curler five minutes before the interval.
Inter did not slow down after half-time, pushing to increase their lead as soon as the second half started. Calhanoglu completed his brilliant performance by providing another assist, this time for Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine star headed home an inch-perfect corner from Calhanoglu to make it 3-0.
Shocked by Inter’s goal at the beginning of the second period, Roma did little to come back into the game afterwards. The Nerazzurri remained in charge of the possession while Roma lacked enough composure to create serious chances.
Jose Mourinho’s side made it 3-1 through Henrikh Mikhtaryan in the 85th minute, but it was already too late to change the outcome of the game.
What’s next for Inter and Roma?
Inter move top of the Serie A table as they leapfrog their arch-rivals Milan. On the other hand, Roma stay fifth as they fail to get any closer to fourth-placed Juventus.
The Nerazzurri must face Bologna in their next league game while Roma travels to England to meet Leicester City in the UEFA Conference League semi-finals.
