Insigne joined the football great on Napoli’s all-time top scorer list.
Napoli defeated Salernitana 4-1 in their Serie A match on Sunday. Following three goals from Juan Jesus, Dries Mertens, and Amir Rrahmani, Lorenzo Insigne converted a penalty to make history at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
It was Insigne’s 115th goal for Napoli, which came in his 418th appearance for the club. The Italy international joins Diego Maradona in a tie for third place in the club’s all-time goal-scoring charts.
Mertens is Napoli’s main penalty taker. However, the Belgian forward stepped aside to let his experienced teammate equal the football legend’s record.
In a post-match interview, Mertens said: “I left the second penalty to Lorenzo because it was important to him.”
Insigne took to Instagram to express his delight at the victory.
“The derbies are not played… they are won…. We continue like this until the end,” Insigne wrote.
“Always and forever FORZA NAPOLI.”
Insigne will leave Napoli to join MLS side Toronto FC in the summer. The 30-year-old can go higher on the club’s goal-scoring charts if he manages to find the net six more times this season. Marek Hamsik sits second with 121 goals, while Mertens leads the chart after finding the net 144 times.
