A man reborn, the 28-year-old has developed an admirable knack for finding the net since his January move to the London Stadium.
Jesse Lingard might be playing the best football of his career but still doesn’t feel like he has hit his peak yet.
Lingard has scored five goals in seven games since completing a temporary move to West Ham United from Manchester United.
The latest of his strikes came in the form of a superb half-volley against Arsenal. He also got an assist on the night, but despite his efforts weren’t enough to secure all three points for the Hammers as they blew away a 3-0 lead and ended up drawing 3-3.
The England midfielder’s recent exploits have not gone unnoticed by Gareth Southgate as he has been recalled to the Three Lions squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
“I still feel like I’m 25,” Lingard told Standard Sport. “A lot more players have played full seasons, I’ve not really. So I don’t feel like I’m at my peak yet.
“If I carry on this form, consistency and focus, we’ll see what the future holds. I’m happy at the moment, playing football with a smile on my face and that’s the main thing.
“When I went on loan, I had to start quick and I’m just playing my natural game at the moment. I’m comfortable. Now it’s just about keeping consistency – that’s what I’ve lacked sometimes over the years. It’s about focus, going into each game with the same mentality.
“I think I can go far. There’s a lot more to come, a lot more to learn but I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
