The German midfielder scored a title-deciding brace in his side’s final-day win over Aston Villa.

Ilkay Gundogan has revealed Jurgen Klopp has been ‘one of the first’ to congratulate him after Manchester City’s Premier League triumph.

The Citizens won their fourth Premier League title under Pep Guardiola when they defeated Aston Villa 3-2 on Sunday.

For a good chunk of the game, it looked as if Liverpool would leapfrog the Citizens from the top of the table. However, Gundogan’s goal in the 76th minute inspired them to come back from being 2-0 behind.

The German midfield completed his brace by scoring the match-winner for the Citizens. The result prevented Liverpool from clinching the title after another impressive league run.

Gundogan, who worked with Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, was asked whether the Liverpool manager congratulated him after the game.

“He was one of the first,” Gundogan responded to Sport1.

“We have always treated each other with the utmost respect. He had another very good season with Liverpool and made life extremely difficult for us. He’s just an outstanding guy and coach, and he’s shown that over the years.”

The 31-year-old says the title-winning goal against Villa is the most crucial goal of his career.

“Based on the ending, I would say yes – and definitely one of my most emotional ones,” he added.

“The goal in the 2013 Champions League final for BVB against Bayern was also important, even if it wasn’t enough in the end.

“On Sunday, we lifted a great deal of pressure because we struggled so much over the entire 90 minutes and we knew that Liverpool were breathing down our necks.”
