The Dutch star left the Spurs after securing a move to Ajax earlier this summer.

Steven Bergwijn has opened up on his decision to leave Tottenham ahead of the next season.

The former PSV Eindhoven star spent a two-year spell at the north London side. However, failing to secure a regular lineup spot under Antonio Conte convinced him to leave Tottenham and return to Netherlands.

Speaking to Ajax‘s official website, he said: “It took a while, it was a lot of back and forth but here we are.

“It started about a year and a half ago. At a certain point, I started to play a bit less at Tottenham, then Ajax came knocking a few times. It almost happened then but, one way or another, it didn’t work out then. Now, it has finally happened.”

Asked about Ajax’s interest, Bergwijn added: “I was a bit shocked. I didn’t see it coming, actually.

“But yeah I was getting left out of the team there and of course you just want to play. So if you can go back to Ajax it’s quite tempting. They always do well in the league and the Champions League. So, it’s a step up for me.”

Despite showing flashes of brilliance during his Tottenham spell, Begwijn never managed to activate his full potential in the Premier League.

The Dutchman scored eight goals in his 83 appearances for the Spurs, struggling to get game time under both Conte and Jose Mourinho.
