Napoli forward Victor Osimhen has cleared the air on a birthday party he attended and visibly broke covid-19 guidelines.

Osimhen has recently come under intense criticism from the Italian media.

It comes after the player tested positive for COVID-19 amid video evidence he attended a party in Lagos.

As seen in a video that surfaced online, Osimhen was not wearing a face mask – as was the same with many others around him. He was also in close proximity to a couple of people in the midst of the celebrations.

Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso has already disclosed that the Nigerian international would be disciplined for his acts while on holiday.

However, Osimhen himself has now come out to explain the events in the build-up to the party.

The 22-year-old claims he didn’t know about it as it was a surprise party planned out for him.

“Before I went to Nigeria, I told my sister that I wouldn’t celebrate my birthday,” he said as quoted by Omasports.

“I was not in the right mood because of my injury.”

“On that particular day, I had been asleep for about six hours. When I woke up, my sister asked me to go downstairs.”

“If you check what I put on, I was wearing the training jersey. I wouldn’t wear that for my birthday party. I wouldn’t dress so casual.”

Osimhen continued: “I could celebrate my birthday in other ways too, but I wasn’t in a good mood. I went downstairs and they were playing music, gospel.”

“I was down there for about 10 minutes before my older brother called me back upstairs. I didn’t throw a party.”

“After I tested positive for COVID-19, I called my family and told them to get tested. All of them have done it and they tested negative.”

Osimhen remains out of action due to a shoulder injury and could be back in contention for spots towards the end of January.
