Jermaine Jenas reckons Jose Mourinho won’t be able to lead Tottenham into the top-four spots without ‘at least two or three players’.

A disastrous start to last season spelled the end of Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs languished down in 14th-place in the Premier League in November, leading to Mourinho’s appointment.

The 57-year-old joined the London club almost a year after losing his job at Manchester United and helped turn things around, with Spurs climbing eight places to finish a respectable sixth.

Not even injuries to star forwards Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son could stop Mourinho salvaging Spurs’ European status, albeit in the Europa League rather than the Champions League instead.

The aim for next season will be to fix that by restoring Spurs’ top-four status or perhaps winning the Europa League.

Mourinho has already welcomed two new signings in central midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and goalkeeper Joe Hart. But while the latter can replace Michel Vorm, there are still no replacements for departed center-back Jan Vertonghen.

If Jenas is correct, though, it will take at least another two quality signings to give the club a chance of playing in the Champions League again.

The former Spurs midfielder told talkSPORT:  “I am worried if I’m totally honest with you.

“I don’t see Tottenham getting in the top four as it stands right now. I’ve not seen anything in regards to a level of performance that tells me they’re going to break back in.

“The end of the season was positive, but it was getting results in not the most beautiful way.

“That’s Jose’s way and I think a lot of Tottenham fans will still take that, because the results are the most important thing.

“But the way I see it right now, they need to bring in at least two or three players and, if they don’t do that, I don’t see how they possibly can get into the top four.”

Although Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has a reputation for pulling off late signings in transfer windows. And with another three weeks before the new season, he still has time to add to his ranks.

One name on everyone’s minds is former star player Gareth Bale, who is out of favor at Real Madrid.
