A narrow win over Huddersfield was enough to send Forest to secure Forest’s place in the next season’s Premier League.
Nottingham Forest defeated Huddersfield 1-0 in the Premier League promotion playoffs final on Sunday. An own goal from Levi Colwill kept the Terriers in the Championship as Forest secured qualification after over two decades.
Nottingham Forest are back in the English top flight!
Forest came into the game on the back of their penalty win over Sheffield United on Tuesday, while Huddersfield had beaten Luton Town to get to the final.
Huddersfield retreated to their own half early on while Forest took complete control of the game. However, the Reds remained cautious of their opponents’ counter-attacking chances, refusing to go all-in with their attacks.
Forest intensified their attacks in the final ten minutes of the first half and finally managed to break the deadlock.
Following a searching cross from James Garner, Levi Colwill kneed the ball into the back of his side’s net under pressure from Ryan Yates.
Huddersfield bounced back to gain possession in the second half, but Forest withheld the pressure. The Terriers thought they had finally found their chance to get back into the game in the 74th minute.
However, after a lengthy VAR check by the referee, he decided not to take the penalty for Huddersfield. Forest had to escape a few more scares before they finally secured their precious victory at Wembley.
The Reds join Fulham and Bournemouth, who have already secured promotion to the Premier League. Burnley, Watford, and Norwich City will take the three sides’ spot in the next season’s Championship.
