The Spurs are set to complete a shock move for the former Chelsea forward.
Tottenham have reportedly reached an agreement with RB Leipzig to sign Timo Werner on a loan deal until the end of the season.
The Spurs, who reportedly have an option to keep Werner permanently beyond the next summer, are set to have a new forward as they continue their first post-Harry Kane campaign.
Let’s take a look at what role Werner can play at Tottenham upon his return to the Premier League.
Not exactly Son Heung-min
Tottenham have remained reliant on Son Heung-min’s incredible form since the start of the season, with the South Korean star being directly involved in 17 goals across all competitions. Son’s seamless integration into Ange Postecoglou’s plans has been crucial to the manager’s solid start at Spurs. But Tottenham will have to play without Son in the next few weeks as he joins South Korea for their Asian Cup campaign.
Signing Werner provides Spurs with a new left winger whose speed could contribute to Postecoglou’s transitional football. Werner can also play as a No.9, which is a crucial quality for a team whose main striker (Richarlison) has scored only six Premier League goals so far this season.
Son is expected to miss between two and six matches for Tottenham due to his participation in the Asian Cup. But what happens after that?
Werner’s off-the-bench impact at RB Leipzig this season has been impressive, and he’s expected to provide backup for Son as Postecoglou’s primary pick on the left-hand side of Tottenham’s attacking line. The German star, who is seemingly motivated to revive his Premier League career, will also compete with Richarlison and Brennan Johnson for a place in the lineup as Postecoglou hopes to have more consistency with Spurs’ attacking output in the second half of the campaign.
